Remember Irish Jerry Quarry?
If you can remember the 60′s, and was familiar with boxing, odds are you do.
Quarry was a heavyweight fighter who won 53 bouts. But he is also famous for losing to Muhammad Ali twice in the 70′s.
Unfortunately, Quarry left another legacy.
Boxers who receive multiple severe blows to the head (in other words, ANY boxers) can have their mental faculties decline later in life. The condition, known as being punch-drunk, has a more formal name: pugilistica dementia.

Sadly, the great Irish Jerry Quarry was a victim. At the young age of 53, he succumbed to pneumonia, but he had suffered for years with the dementia which had made the large, proud man virtually helpless.
Today’s FamiyFirst pick is the Jerry Quarry Foundation’s website. The foundation was founded by Jerry and his brothers in 1990 with the goal of making boxing a safer sport, as well as providing funds for any suffering from pugilistica dementia.
Whether or not you view boxing as a sport, this is still a great cause that could use your help.
